Heavy, Oily Shine OUT! Healthy, Natural Shine IN!

The women of today want hair that moves and has lots of body! Here are just a few tips that will help you achieve a light, natural shine that provides the appropriate balance of moisture without weighing the hair down.

For our natural and curly haired ladies, try raw coconut oil. Don't be fooled by the drug store, processed versions of coconut oil! Visit your local organic store or food market (Trader Joes, Whole Foods..etc) and purchase the raw, unprocessed coconut oil as the drug store and beauty supply versions may not provide the same results. Use this oil to combat dry scalp or to provide moisture to your beautiful curls, braids, locs or twists!

Another great tip is to steer clear of shampoos and conditioners that are alcohol based as they are formulated to remove oil from the hair and scalp and may cause excessive dryness. Instead, look for those that are sulfate free and are heavy in moisturizers. One of my favs for added moisture is the Design Essentials product line. Also, Creme of Nature's Argon Oil line, which can be found in most local drugstores or beauty supply stores.

Stay FAR, FAR AWAY from Oil Sheens! We all love a little added shine to polish off our look from time to time but oil sheens typically contain heavy oils that make your hair greasy or weighed down. They also usually contain alcohols that may cause the hair to be brittle or cause breakage. An alternative would be shine mists or glossers! Be sure to look for these key words: Sheer, Mist, Weightless and Oil-Free; all of which are indicators of a product that is formulated to provide shine without making the hair oily or greasy.

The days of weighed down, greasy hair is a thing of the past ladies! Hopefully these tips will help you achieve a more natural shine so that when your feeling fierce and your Beyonce' Fan starts blowing, your hair responds on cue;)
